"Pupils develop highly positive attitudes to learning because relationships with staff are strong. Adults encourage pupils to ‘have a go’ and reinforce the message that they should work without fear of failure. Consequently, pupils willingly try new things, confident that their teachers and learning support assistants will help them if they go wrong or get stuck."

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

Our Commitment to Inclusion

At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, we are committed to providing an inclusive and supportive learning environment where every child is valued, respected, and given the opportunity to thrive. We believe that all children—regardless of their individual needs—should be able to access a broad, balanced, and enriching curriculum.

We work in partnership with families, external professionals, and the wider school community to ensure that children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) receive the right support at the right time.

What is SEND?

A child is considered to have SEND if they have a learning difficulty or disability that requires special educational provision. This may include challenges with:

  • Communication and interaction
  • Cognition and learning
  • Social, emotional, and mental health
  • Sensory and/or physical needs

We follow the guidance set out in the SEND Code of Practice (2015) and are committed to early identification and intervention to support each child’s development.

How We Support Children with SEND

Our approach is personalised and child-centred. We:

  • Identify needs early through observation, assessment, and close communication with parents and carers
  • Develop individual support plans tailored to each child’s strengths and areas of need
  • Work closely with external agencies such as educational psychologists, speech and language therapists, and health professionals
  • Regularly review progress and adapt support as needed
  • Ensure all staff receive appropriate training to meet the needs of our pupils
Meet Our SENDCo

Our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCo) is:
Mrs Sinead Killian (Deputy Headteacher)

Mrs Killian oversees SEND provision across the school and is available to meet with parents to discuss concerns, progress, and support strategies.

Working in Partnership with Parents

We believe that strong home-school partnerships are key to successful outcomes for children with SEND. We value your insights and work collaboratively to ensure your child feels happy, safe, and confident in their learning journey.

If you have any concerns about your child’s development or would like to discuss SEND support, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
